Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is celebrated every December 7th and is meant to remember and honor the 2,403 victims who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. On August 23rd, 1994, the United States Congress designated December 7th of each year as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

It is tradition to fly the United States flag at half-staff until sunset to honor the brave veterans who lost their lives on this day.

A Little Background

On December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked Naval Station Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. This attack happened without any warning and without declaration of war and killed 2,403 United States non-combatants. This attack also sank two United States Navy battleships and damaged five others. It damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minelayer. Aircraft losses totaled 188 destroyed and 159 damaged.

Just hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Canada declared war on Japan. Canada was the first Western nation to do so. The following day, the United States followed suite and declared war on Japan and entered World War II on the Allies' side.

On this day, we remember those who lost their lives at the attack on Pearl Harbor.
